Question
Can you give me any history info on a 1812 french made sousaphone. The markings on it are - "conturier pelisson blanchon"
                            Maison Fondee en 1812 Gaillard.Msartel & Loislet - Successeurs - LYON-PARIS

Answer
The Couturier company was founded in 1812 by Jacques pere in Lyon

In 1836, partnered with DuCois as DuBois & Couturier

In 1875, Pelison freres & Cie succeeded Couturier

In 1905, as Pelisson, Guinot & Blanchon

In 1931 Gaillard, Martel & Loiselet; Lyon-Paris succeeded Pelisson

In 1935 Gaillard & Loiselet succeeded Gaillard, Martel & Loiselet; Lyon-Paris

So, it looks like it is of 1930's vintage.

Expertise

Please note: My area is BRASS instruments, not other wind, string or percussion instruments. I will provide information on antique, obscure and out of production BRASS instruments. 1) Please don't ask for evaluations, I'll not provide them on this site. 2) I am often asked very similar questions, so I'd invite you to first check on Horn-u-Copia.net. Much of the information I have garnered about this topic, I have posted on this WEB site.

Experience

I perform in several historical bands, have informally researched the area, repair brass instruments, and operate a Forum dedicated to the topic at http://horn-u-copia.net
