Antique Musical Instruments/Broadwood and Sons Grand

Question
QUESTION: Just a couple of questions.

I have in my possession a 7'1" - 7'9" Concert Grand made by Broadwood and Sons (no Ltd.) made in the years between 1880 - 1895. I know it went to a concert hall in England where it stayed for a good decade at least. It came into my possession in the 70s. Furthermore, it's action and overall state isn't too great... but not by any means poor.

I am willing to have it fully restored by Broadwood including action, felts and strings etc. Is it worth doing this?... I am a semi-professional pianist myself but know that I wouldn't use this as a practice instrument, more as a heritage instrument used for playing turn of the 20th century pieces.

Also is it worth having it shipped to Australia... where I live now permanently? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Tom

ANSWER: Hi,

Thank you for using allexperts.

Broadwood and Sons is a very fine piano and absolutely worth restoration and transport. Out of curiosity, what are they charging for the restoration?

QUESTION: They charge about 50 pounds for a quote but also a complete history of the instrument (i.e. date made, sold to whom etc.) but when I rang them up they said it would be in the vicinity of 4000-7000 pounds, for a pretty much complete restoration.

Answer
Hi,

Thank you for using allexperts.

Yeah, that is a very fair assessment. I would advise it.
