Antique Musical Instruments/Conway Boston /Kimball Baby Grand
Expert: Todd Lindeblad - 4/21/2010
QuestionQUESTION: Hello,
I am looking for a piano for my wife, but I don't have a lot of money to spend on one. A friend's parents have a Conway Boston upright, Model No. 24476, that they are willing to part with. I have not sean or heard it yet so I can't vouch for its condition. I know it has not been played in years - not regularly played in perhaps 20, and has not been tuned in years. Can you tell how old the piano is? I am also looking at Kimball Baby Grand 5' x 5' number 345813, which I believe is from the 20's or 30's. I'm told it needs tuning, but is in good shape - asking $800. Any thoughts would be much appreciated. Cheers - Chris
ANSWER: Hi,
Thank you for using allexperts.
I would chose the Kimball over the Conway, it's a much finer brand.

QUESTION: Thanks for the prompt input, Todd.
Follow up - now there is a 1920's era Merrill of Boston 3/4 upright in the picture. Is tuned and well maintained, with a restored cabinet. Seller is looking for $1000, so only $200 more than the Kimball Baby Grand, which is not in as good condition and hasn't been tuned in 7 years. What is your opinion of Merrill? Thanks.
Chris
AnswerHi,
Thank you for using allexperts.
I would still go with the Kimball absolutely, A grand is always better than an upright.
