Question
hi.....thank you in advance for your time & attention.........just bought a Cavalier mellophone in E flat, wiith S.N. 02888..it is totally integral & i am happy with it.......a rough estimate of year of birth would be greatly appreciated .......a matte silver finish except inside bell & oval topside bell (CAVALIER, Elkhorn, Ind.)..........thank you again for your good work..you are making a difference....with best wish & anticipation, your sincerely canadian friend, wolf

Answer
I'm wondering whether you may have missed an initial digit on the serial number.  Cavalier wouldn't have started out with a initial 0.  Let's assume for the moment that the serial is actually 102888.  In that case, it would have been made in 1935.

Expertise

Please note: My area is BRASS instruments, not other wind, string or percussion instruments. I will provide information on antique, obscure and out of production BRASS instruments. 1) Please don't ask for evaluations, I'll not provide them on this site. 2) I am often asked very similar questions, so I'd invite you to first check on Horn-u-Copia.net. Much of the information I have garnered about this topic, I have posted on this WEB site.

Experience

I perform in several historical bands, have informally researched the area, repair brass instruments, and operate a Forum dedicated to the topic at http://horn-u-copia.net
