Question
A student recently brought me a Keystone trumpet (serial number 38363). How do I find out the value of this trumpet (insurance purposes)? I played it, and the lower range is magnificent, the upper range not so much. Is that true of older trumpets? Thanks!

Answer
Weymann appears to be a dealer not a maker in Philadelphia 1864-1942.   In 1885, he started advertising as H. A. Weymann & Son.

As a dealer it is likely that he purchased from various makers.  Consequently, characteristics and quality are also likely to vary.  He used the name Keystone as a line of instruments in his later years of business.

Expertise

Please note: My area is BRASS instruments, not other wind, string or percussion instruments. I will provide information on antique, obscure and out of production BRASS instruments. 1) Please don't ask for evaluations, I'll not provide them on this site. 2) I am often asked very similar questions, so I'd invite you to first check on Horn-u-Copia.net. Much of the information I have garnered about this topic, I have posted on this WEB site.

Experience

I perform in several historical bands, have informally researched the area, repair brass instruments, and operate a Forum dedicated to the topic at http://horn-u-copia.net
