Question
I just recently acquired a A.M. Bottali key lever valve trombone. Dont know much or cant find any info on it. I was wondering if you knew anything about them. Its in descent shape except the valves are going to need work freeing them up. I would appreciate any light you might be able shed on this. I saw a Roth on horn u copia that looked similar to it. Thanks, ozzy

Answer
It would make sense that it looked similar to a Roth since Fratelli Bottali took over Ferdinando Roth'S company in 1898.  The company had several name changes but was called  A & M Bottali from 1912 to 1926.

Those valve levers are what are nicknamed, clock springs.  Usually, the issues with the valves are either in the rotors or the linkages, usually the spring actions are ok.

Expertise

Please note: My area is BRASS instruments, not other wind, string or percussion instruments. I will provide information on antique, obscure and out of production BRASS instruments. 1) Please don't ask for evaluations, I'll not provide them on this site. 2) I am often asked very similar questions, so I'd invite you to first check on Horn-u-Copia.net. Much of the information I have garnered about this topic, I have posted on this WEB site.

Experience

I perform in several historical bands, have informally researched the area, repair brass instruments, and operate a Forum dedicated to the topic at http://horn-u-copia.net
