Question
I am researching the date of a trombone that I purchased at an auction in DEC 2007. The case is marked with 1-15 Royal New South Wales Lancers Band. The trombone is stamped with a Starline logo, Made in London, England by Rudall Carte & Company, LTD.

Any insights that you have to share would be helpful.

Answer

Though primarily woodwind manufacturers, this company which was established in 1852 as successors to Rudall & Rose, in 1856 became a important military music establishment. They were succeeded by Rudal Carte & Co, in 1872.Rudall Carte was bought by Boosey and Hawkes in about 1944. Starting in 1955 the serial numbers follow the B&H system (about 70000) . It would be difficult to establish a serial number list for the company as they maintained separate lists for each type of instrument. I can't find any listing for the company at the above address.

Expertise

Please note: My area is BRASS instruments, not other wind, string or percussion instruments. I will provide information on antique, obscure and out of production BRASS instruments. 1) Please don't ask for evaluations, I'll not provide them on this site. 2) I am often asked very similar questions, so I'd invite you to first check on Horn-u-Copia.net. Much of the information I have garnered about this topic, I have posted on this WEB site.

Experience

I perform in several historical bands, have informally researched the area, repair brass instruments, and operate a Forum dedicated to the topic at http://horn-u-copia.net
