Antique Musical Instruments/Antique Trumpet

Question

Trumpet
Hello.  I purchased what looks like an antique trumpet from an estate sale but since I don't know anything about musical instruments I was wondering if you could tell me a little bit about it, i.e. - the year it was manufactured, etc. and if it is indeed a trumpet (see picture).  On the bell it has engraved "USA Grand Rapids Band Instrument Co."  The serial number is 115116.

Thank you.

Answer
I believe that that appears to be an extended model cornet.  Grand Rapids was the sister company to the York company.  They made basically the same model except that the top professional models only had the York label on them.  Unfortunately, there is no serial number list for Grand Rapids.

Expertise

Please note: My area is BRASS instruments, not other wind, string or percussion instruments. I will provide information on antique, obscure and out of production BRASS instruments. 1) Please don't ask for evaluations, I'll not provide them on this site. 2) I am often asked very similar questions, so I'd invite you to first check on Horn-u-Copia.net. Much of the information I have garnered about this topic, I have posted on this WEB site.

Experience

I perform in several historical bands, have informally researched the area, repair brass instruments, and operate a Forum dedicated to the topic at http://horn-u-copia.net
