Antique Musical Instruments/Euphonium

Question
We have a silver plated, brass, Pan American Euphonium. It is inscribed on the
bell with "Pan-American made in Elkhart Indiana U.S.A." The serial # on the
middle key is 64906. It has mother-of-pearl on the top of each key. Can you tell
me what year it was made and anything else of interest.
Thank you.

Answer
That horn would date to 1929.  Pan American was a second, or student, line for Conn. But back then that often meant simply that the horn was given less decoration and/or were more basically equipped.  The horn itself was basically the same as the main line.

Expertise

Please note: My area is BRASS instruments, not other wind, string or percussion instruments. I will provide information on antique, obscure and out of production BRASS instruments. 1) Please don't ask for evaluations, I'll not provide them on this site. 2) I am often asked very similar questions, so I'd invite you to first check on Horn-u-Copia.net. Much of the information I have garnered about this topic, I have posted on this WEB site.

Experience

I perform in several historical bands, have informally researched the area, repair brass instruments, and operate a Forum dedicated to the topic at http://horn-u-copia.net
