Antique Musical Instruments/Value of 1965 Kawai console piano
Expert: Todd Lindeblad - 8/25/2010
Question
QUESTION: I bought this piano from a reputable firm for $3500 in 1999 from a college School of Music sale. Was told it was a 1969. However, years later, I am told the serial number of the piano pegs it conclusively as a 1964 or 1965. Rumor has it there were a lot of design flaw problems during these years. Is this true? I'm hoping to sell it and don't know its true value or what a fair price is. And, I don't want to mis-represent the piano if in fact it has a lot of repair issues. Your advice on price and what I should tell a potential buyer?
ANSWER: Hi,
Thank you for using allexperts.
I have not heard of any major issues with the pianos built that year of Kawai, but you can have the piano checked by a technician. To do so, please go to the following link and put in your zip code and piano technicians in your area will come up:

In our current economic and musical climate, we estimate the value of your piano to be at around $3,000-4,000. If you have any further questions, please feel free to contact us.

QUESTION: Hi,
Thanks for your response. A technician did look at it and he and the Kawai rep said that 1964, 1965 were the first years Kawai imported consumer pianos and there were design flaws that were resolved by 1969. That said, would you still recommend a vale of $3-4K?
Thank you,
Deborah
AnswerHi,
Thanks again for using allexperts.
I would lower the estimate to around $1,000-2,000. If you have any further questions, please feel free to contact us.
