Antique Musical Instruments/Pan American baritone

Question
We bought our daughter a used baritone off of the web for $150. Yesterday she came home very excited because her teacher thinks it may be very valuable. The serial # is 82725 and it is silver toned outside and gold tone on the inside.I have told her it is probably brass but she insists that it does not look like the other baritone in her class. Could you shed some light on this for us please. I am not asking for a price since it has obvious repair soldering and was part of a school's band program, but is not very dented (yay)I'm just hoping we may have a diamond in the rough. Thank you for your time, Robyn

Answer
Pan American was the student line of the Conn Company.  But, that isn't to say that they were of lesser quality, they generally had less decoration and optional features.  It is at least possible that the bell is gold plated.  Be careful will polishing the bell if it is gold plating as gold plating is not as durable as silver plating.

It was made in 1932.

Assuming it is in - or can be returned to - good playing condition, it should be a very good horn for her.

Expertise

Please note: My area is BRASS instruments, not other wind, string or percussion instruments. I will provide information on antique, obscure and out of production BRASS instruments. 1) Please don't ask for evaluations, I'll not provide them on this site. 2) I am often asked very similar questions, so I'd invite you to first check on Horn-u-Copia.net. Much of the information I have garnered about this topic, I have posted on this WEB site.

Experience

I perform in several historical bands, have informally researched the area, repair brass instruments, and operate a Forum dedicated to the topic at http://horn-u-copia.net
