Antique Musical Instruments/Goumat & Co Tuba

Question
Hi,
I am so excited to get some answers, I bought a Tuba (12 inch round opening) horn at an auction today. I would love to know some history and possibly an age for it.
It has 3 chambers and also beautiful looking like maples leaves across part of the horn and the finger pad and across the pipes too. It is so pretty but very dirty so I am also wondering if there is a home remedy that I can clean it with? thanks so much.

Answer
I suspect what you may have is a baritone.  Here are some examples of Goumat baritones:

Goumat is most likely a stencil, made by an unknown maker for an unknown dealer.  Langwill considers Goumat to be a counterfeit Goumas, but I believe that is too sever an indictment.

Give it a bath in soap and water and then use silver polish or brasso on it depending what finish it has.

Expertise

Please note: My area is BRASS instruments, not other wind, string or percussion instruments. I will provide information on antique, obscure and out of production BRASS instruments. 1) Please don't ask for evaluations, I'll not provide them on this site. 2) I am often asked very similar questions, so I'd invite you to first check on Horn-u-Copia.net. Much of the information I have garnered about this topic, I have posted on this WEB site.

Experience

I perform in several historical bands, have informally researched the area, repair brass instruments, and operate a Forum dedicated to the topic at http://horn-u-copia.net
