Question
QUESTION: Dear Sir.
I have my great grandfathers mandolin. Inside its marked "monarch" Its at least 75 years old, It looks like a half watermelon with 2 types of wood inlay, 1 dark,1 light. Sold top and ebony frets. I also have the original case.   I've tried looking on the net, but can't seem to find any info on it.   Thanks Mike

ANSWER: Hello,
Are you looking for just general info?
A price? For restoration?
Thanks,
Glenn

QUESTION: Dear Glen. I would like to know what its worth and be able to gather more info on it.  I took it to an antique show on the weekend, turns out it was a show to buy coins, gold, and antiques. However the gentleman I spoke with said it was made in Europe around 1880-1900's. the neck is rose wood not ebony. He also said it is in great shape for the age and i was lucky it has the original case.  Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again Mike

Answer
Hi,

I think a ball parked price for a store would be $500, a person $300, a collector $700+.

These are ball park prices from someone who isn't familiar with mandolins, I've only played one once at a concert, I played Rocky top.

You might want to visit http://www.guitarspecialist.com/ They seem to be very knowledgeable.

Thanks, sorry I couldn't be of more help,
Glenn
