Question
I have an old American Prep trombone. It looks silver on the outside, gold on the inside.

I would like to know about the quality of the instrument; whether it is a horn intended for amateurs or professionals.
I have tried to find information about the reputation of Frank instruments, but cannot find the information I want.

thank you,
-J

Answer
I don't for certain know the answer.

Frank fist worked for and then started his own business but maintained a god relationship with Holton. It appears that he used some parts from Holton and also valve assemblies from Blessing (as did Bach, and a number of others.)

I have one Frank Sousaphone, that I haven't restored yet, but it appears to be well made.  And, a knowledgeable friend has Frank trumpets/cornets and says postive things about them.  So, I expect them to be of good quality.

On the other hand, why would you name your instruent American Prep, unless you were aiming for a student market?

Please note: My area is BRASS instruments, not other wind, string or percussion instruments. I will provide information on antique, obscure and out of production BRASS instruments. 1) Please don't ask for evaluations, I'll not provide them on this site. 2) I am often asked very similar questions, so I'd invite you to first check on Horn-u-Copia.net. Much of the information I have garnered about this topic, I have posted on this WEB site.

Experience

I perform in several historical bands, have informally researched the area, repair brass instruments, and operate a Forum dedicated to the topic at http://horn-u-copia.net
