Antique Musical Instruments/Antique Saxophone

Question
Hello! I have a question concerning an instrument that was found inside the walls of an old slave house. My brother in law was repairing a wall in an old home one time and found a black case hid within the walls. The case crumbled with the slightest touch and inside that case was a saxophone. He kept the saxophone and upon examining it we have found the word "vilo" engraved at the mouth of the sax, also we have found an indian headress engraved on it. We know nothing of saxophones, but we do know that it has mother of pearl on ALL keys and it has had to been hidden for some reason within the walls of the slave house. We are too scared to attempt to clean the brass saxophone for fear of damaging it. Could you please lend any information you can about a possible price range and any additional information you may have? I have pictures that I can send you upon request!

Answer
HI Glen,

What an interesting mystery you have!

I don't know of any maker named Vilo.  I suspect that that may be part of a word.  Maybe the rest is still obscured.

I could ask a bunch of questions, but maybe it would simply be easier for you to send pictures, and then we can go from there.

Send them to Kenton@PunxyPa.com

These things are always fun to explore.

Expertise

Please note: My area is BRASS instruments, not other wind, string or percussion instruments. I will provide information on antique, obscure and out of production BRASS instruments. 1) Please don't ask for evaluations, I'll not provide them on this site. 2) I am often asked very similar questions, so I'd invite you to first check on Horn-u-Copia.net. Much of the information I have garnered about this topic, I have posted on this WEB site.

Experience

I perform in several historical bands, have informally researched the area, repair brass instruments, and operate a Forum dedicated to the topic at http://horn-u-copia.net
