Antique Musical Instruments/Buescher Cornet

Question
My grandfather bought a Buescher cornet in 1920 to play at the University of Wisconsin.  My son now plays it in his school band.  On the bell are the words "The Buescher" Pat Oct.29.07 Elkhart Ind.  The number on the base of the 2nd valve is 17031.  Can you give me any information about this instrument?

Answer
It appears that the instrument was made in 1912.  Tell your son that though it is old, it was made to be a professional instrument, and Buescher was a quality maker.

The patent is for the  "Split-No-Tone" bell, which was made with thicker metal in the flare of the bell, to provide more power without cracking.

Expertise

Please note: My area is BRASS instruments, not other wind, string or percussion instruments. I will provide information on antique, obscure and out of production BRASS instruments. 1) Please don't ask for evaluations, I'll not provide them on this site. 2) I am often asked very similar questions, so I'd invite you to first check on Horn-u-Copia.net. Much of the information I have garnered about this topic, I have posted on this WEB site.

Experience

I perform in several historical bands, have informally researched the area, repair brass instruments, and operate a Forum dedicated to the topic at http://horn-u-copia.net
