Antique Musical Instruments/Conn Director

Question
I have a conn Director trumpet, SN# 636393.  I would like to know if you might be able to date this trumpet for me?  I would also like to know the difference between a trumpet and a cornet.  Thank you!

Answer
A cornet has a different change in bore from mouthpiece to bell than the trumpet.  The trumpet starts with a larger bore and ends up at about the same as the cornet.  They are also usually wrapped slightly differently with the cornet looking rounder and shorter.  The trumpet is long and narrow.  The cornet has a more mellow sound than the trumpet. But the difference is subtle.  Originally, the trumpet was cylindrical throughout much of its length and it was a brilliant sounding instrument, but modern trumpets are more conical.

Your trumpet is a 1956.

Expertise

Please note: My area is BRASS instruments, not other wind, string or percussion instruments. I will provide information on antique, obscure and out of production BRASS instruments. 1) Please don't ask for evaluations, I'll not provide them on this site. 2) I am often asked very similar questions, so I'd invite you to first check on Horn-u-Copia.net. Much of the information I have garnered about this topic, I have posted on this WEB site.

Experience

I perform in several historical bands, have informally researched the area, repair brass instruments, and operate a Forum dedicated to the topic at http://horn-u-copia.net
