Antique Musical Instruments/Conn Sousaphone

Question
I acquired an old Conn sousaphone at an estate sale about a week ago. It is silver plated, has four valves, has a 30" bell that is gold-colored and lacquered on the inside, and has the serial # 80117 (it is HUGE!). It has three long support ribs along its outer edges, and a nice design on its bell. Can you tell me anything about the history of this horn? Any information would help!

Answer
Please check that serial number again, I don't think that can be right.  While you are at it, check the bell collar (where the body and the bell go together,  look for some numbers and the letter "K".  And, if you would like to send pictures, send them to Kenton@punxypa.com

Expertise

Please note: My area is BRASS instruments, not other wind, string or percussion instruments. I will provide information on antique, obscure and out of production BRASS instruments. 1) Please don't ask for evaluations, I'll not provide them on this site. 2) I am often asked very similar questions, so I'd invite you to first check on Horn-u-Copia.net. Much of the information I have garnered about this topic, I have posted on this WEB site.

Experience

I perform in several historical bands, have informally researched the area, repair brass instruments, and operate a Forum dedicated to the topic at http://horn-u-copia.net
