Antique Musical Instruments/Courtois cornet

Question
Dear Sir: I have a very tarnished cornet stamped with numerous award citations (latest 1878) and labeled "Antoine Courtois & Mille," purchased 35 years ago in a Seattle antique shop. Any ideas on its history? Thank you, Kurt Armbruster.

Answer
Kurt,

Courtois and Mille formed a partnership in 1856.  The company existed until 1947.  Speculation: They participated in an Exhibition in 1878.  They also participated in one in 1889, in which they also won an award. Therefore, it would appear that your horn is dated between 1878-1889.

Expertise

Please note: My area is BRASS instruments, not other wind, string or percussion instruments. I will provide information on antique, obscure and out of production BRASS instruments. 1) Please don't ask for evaluations, I'll not provide them on this site. 2) I am often asked very similar questions, so I'd invite you to first check on Horn-u-Copia.net. Much of the information I have garnered about this topic, I have posted on this WEB site.

Experience

I perform in several historical bands, have informally researched the area, repair brass instruments, and operate a Forum dedicated to the topic at http://horn-u-copia.net
