Antique Musical Instruments/Frank Holton Courturier cornet

Question
My daughter wants to play trumpet in school band. We have a Frank Holton Courturier cornet serial #14251 with a Horne Model 28 mouthpiece. It definitely needs cleaning up. How old is it and is it an instrument that would be good for her to use if we had it cleaned up?

Answer
That horn dates back to 1911.  You should probably have it checked to see if it plays in modern pitch.  Other than that, you might want to have a repair service to go over it to see what kind of condition it is in.  It could very possibly be a good horn.

Expertise

Please note: My area is BRASS instruments, not other wind, string or percussion instruments. I will provide information on antique, obscure and out of production BRASS instruments. 1) Please don't ask for evaluations, I'll not provide them on this site. 2) I am often asked very similar questions, so I'd invite you to first check on Horn-u-Copia.net. Much of the information I have garnered about this topic, I have posted on this WEB site.

Experience

I perform in several historical bands, have informally researched the area, repair brass instruments, and operate a Forum dedicated to the topic at http://horn-u-copia.net
