Question
Hello,

I own a Getzen/Elkhorn Wisconsin Cornet with the serial # 19144. It was my Grandmother's and I am trying to find an AGE on my cornet.

Answer
Getzen started making cornets in 1947.  They had a major fire in 1983.  The serial number lists that are available all start  letters and start in 1964.  Consequently, I would think your horn was made between 1947 and 1964.  You may make some further estimates in that serial #8814 was supposed to be around 1948-9, and 196054 from the 50's.  Certainly would appear to be somewhere in the 50s.

Expertise

Please note: My area is BRASS instruments, not other wind, string or percussion instruments. I will provide information on antique, obscure and out of production BRASS instruments. 1) Please don't ask for evaluations, I'll not provide them on this site. 2) I am often asked very similar questions, so I'd invite you to first check on Horn-u-Copia.net. Much of the information I have garnered about this topic, I have posted on this WEB site.

Experience

I perform in several historical bands, have informally researched the area, repair brass instruments, and operate a Forum dedicated to the topic at http://horn-u-copia.net
