Antique Musical Instruments/Harry B Jay Instrument

Question
I inherited what looks to me like a french horn but the curl is not quite as tight as the french horn.  It was manufactured by the Harry B Jay Company of Chicago and it has Columbia Patent scribed on it.  It is in a hard leather case with deep green cloth lining.  I would appreciate any information including general value.

Answer
I believe what you are describing is a mellophone.  I've not tried a Jay mellophone, but would expect it to be a decent instrument.  Unfortunately, there is not much use for mellophones these days.  They have been dropped from the modern concert band, as French Horns are more accepted for that role.  Columbia was a tradename or model for Jay.

Expertise

Please note: My area is BRASS instruments, not other wind, string or percussion instruments. I will provide information on antique, obscure and out of production BRASS instruments. 1) Please don't ask for evaluations, I'll not provide them on this site. 2) I am often asked very similar questions, so I'd invite you to first check on Horn-u-Copia.net. Much of the information I have garnered about this topic, I have posted on this WEB site.

Experience

I perform in several historical bands, have informally researched the area, repair brass instruments, and operate a Forum dedicated to the topic at http://horn-u-copia.net
