Antique Musical Instruments/Harry Pedler American Trumpet

Question
I acquired a Harry Pedler & Sons Inc. American Trumpet some years back. It is in very good condition as it was stored inside. The serial number is 11830. Different from modern trumpets, it has an extra slide coming off of the first valve that extends the pipe leading to the bell. I have been searching for more info about this instrument and would just like to know more about it.

Thanks,
Evan Mealer

Answer
Hi Evan,

Isn't it an American Triumph?  I believe that was the model name that Pedler used for some of his horns.  It is most likely a 1920's vintage horn.  Some bands were still playing at high pitch at that time, and I suspect that is the purpose of the other slide you are talking about.  The other possibility is that it was intended to convert it to another key, possibly C or A.

There are no serial lists that exist that I'm aware of to help date the horn.

Please note: My area is BRASS instruments, not other wind, string or percussion instruments. I will provide information on antique, obscure and out of production BRASS instruments. 1) Please don't ask for evaluations, I'll not provide them on this site. 2) I am often asked very similar questions, so I'd invite you to first check on Horn-u-Copia.net. Much of the information I have garnered about this topic, I have posted on this WEB site.

I perform in several historical bands, have informally researched the area, repair brass instruments, and operate a Forum dedicated to the topic at http://horn-u-copia.net
