Question
QUESTION: I have a horn ?? Name brand is Champion. Made in Slovakia. Has three valves. It is like a small tuba. It is silver. I can find no other markings on it. Can you help me find more information on it?

ANSWER: Sounds like you might have a Lyon and Healy Champion instrument.  And, it could be a Eb tuba, or a Bb Euphonium, or baritone, or even an alto horn, depending on how small it is.  On place to start is how large is the bell and how tall is it?

---------- FOLLOW-UP ----------

QUESTION: The bell is 10" and the height is 23" the information I received from the owners is it was brought here in the early 1900's from the Ukraine. I was told it was a great great uncles. I have found no other markings on it and am curious about it. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank You          Jeff

Answer
At 10 inches, I would say that you have a Euphonium/baritone.
If you want to send pictures to me (kenton@punxypa.com) maybe I can see something that will help narrow it down more.

At this point, I suspect it is a Lyon & Healy product, that was made after 1923.

Expertise

Please note: My area is BRASS instruments, not other wind, string or percussion instruments. I will provide information on antique, obscure and out of production BRASS instruments. 1) Please don't ask for evaluations, I'll not provide them on this site. 2) I am often asked very similar questions, so I'd invite you to first check on Horn-u-Copia.net. Much of the information I have garnered about this topic, I have posted on this WEB site.

Experience

I perform in several historical bands, have informally researched the area, repair brass instruments, and operate a Forum dedicated to the topic at http://horn-u-copia.net
