Question
Years ago read an obituary of a band director.  Think he had been the
director of the university of indiana band.  Recall that obituray said that he
had made arrangements with a manufacturer to make instruments for his
band.  Have tried to see if there was a connection between the deceased band
director and the indiana band instrument company.  Unfortunately do not
know the name of the band director.  Also, wonder about any signifcance of
an Indian Head engraved on the bell of an Indiana Band Instrument.
Please accept my apology if this is not one of your interests.
It doesn't matter if this question is private, public or ignored.

Answer
I have never heard that story.  What I do know of the history of the Indiana Band Instrument Company is that they were established by by the Martin Company president Fred Holtz in Elkhart Ind. in 1938, but they were operated independently until 1942, when they became the student instrument line for Martin.

Expertise

Please note: My area is BRASS instruments, not other wind, string or percussion instruments. I will provide information on antique, obscure and out of production BRASS instruments. 1) Please don't ask for evaluations, I'll not provide them on this site. 2) I am often asked very similar questions, so I'd invite you to first check on Horn-u-Copia.net. Much of the information I have garnered about this topic, I have posted on this WEB site.

Experience

I perform in several historical bands, have informally researched the area, repair brass instruments, and operate a Forum dedicated to the topic at http://horn-u-copia.net
