Antique Musical Instruments/Kalashen trumpet

Question
I have a Kalashen trumpet that belonged to my father.  I stumbled onto your site and saw that someone else was seeking the same information and wondered if any more details were discovered about the origins and value of this trumpet.  Mine also has the patented 1910.  Thanks for any answers you can give me.   Ann

Answer
Hi Ann

Mark Kalashen was a Dealer and possibly a Maker in New York from 1895 to 1930 who dealt in both woodwinds and brass.  His address in 1901 was 173 Bowery St, and between 1904 - 1925 14 Cooper St.

The Patent date only establishes that the horn is no older than that.

Collectors would probably find the horn interesting because you don't see many of them, but also probably not highly valuable.  Basically, this is because this brand never established much of a reputation.  (This says nothing about whether it was a good playing instrument or not.)  And, if the horn was an import, then had the name stencilled on it, it would be worth even less.

Expertise

Please note: My area is BRASS instruments, not other wind, string or percussion instruments. I will provide information on antique, obscure and out of production BRASS instruments. 1) Please don't ask for evaluations, I'll not provide them on this site. 2) I am often asked very similar questions, so I'd invite you to first check on Horn-u-Copia.net. Much of the information I have garnered about this topic, I have posted on this WEB site.

Experience

I perform in several historical bands, have informally researched the area, repair brass instruments, and operate a Forum dedicated to the topic at http://horn-u-copia.net
