Antique Musical Instruments/Mahillon baritone

Question
I've got a baritone with the following markers on the bell underneath a kind of weapon (2 belgian flags and te text l'union fait la force): HAKKERT ROTTERDAM 151 C. MAHILLON BRUXELLES K and a star. Can you give me an indication of the period this horn was built?

Answer
Charles Mahillon founded his business in Bruxelles in 1836, and continued in business until 1935.  In its earlier years appear to have been a notable highly regarded company, but in later years, their quality fell off.

They were a supplier to the army.  Most of their euphoniums that I have seen were 4 valve models.

But, I don't know of any other ways of dating the instrument other than maybe some of its physical characteristics.  Things like waterkey (whether there are any), type of water key spring's, configuration of valves, casings and caps can be indications of age.

Expertise

Please note: My area is BRASS instruments, not other wind, string or percussion instruments. I will provide information on antique, obscure and out of production BRASS instruments. 1) Please don't ask for evaluations, I'll not provide them on this site. 2) I am often asked very similar questions, so I'd invite you to first check on Horn-u-Copia.net. Much of the information I have garnered about this topic, I have posted on this WEB site.

Experience

I perform in several historical bands, have informally researched the area, repair brass instruments, and operate a Forum dedicated to the topic at http://horn-u-copia.net
