Antique Musical Instruments/Marceau Trombone

Question
Hi - I have a Marceau Valve Trombone which was apparently a Czech manufacturer sold by Sears.  Do you know the approximate date of manufacture?  There is no serial number and the word Czech is on the mouth piece.  Also would be interested in an estimate on value if it was in very good condition - thanks for any help you can provide.  Sue

Answer
If "Czech" is on the mouthpiece, then it doesn't give us much of a clue, as mouthpieces and instruments often go their separate ways.

If you mean mouthpipe rather mouthpiece, then

The McKinley Act of 1891 required that all instruments be labeled with information on where it was manufactured.

And a 1923 law added "made in ". . . to the requirement.

So, if the horn has Czech on it but not "made in" then it would seem like it was made somewhere between 1891 and 1923.

Expertise

Please note: My area is BRASS instruments, not other wind, string or percussion instruments. I will provide information on antique, obscure and out of production BRASS instruments. 1) Please don't ask for evaluations, I'll not provide them on this site. 2) I am often asked very similar questions, so I'd invite you to first check on Horn-u-Copia.net. Much of the information I have garnered about this topic, I have posted on this WEB site.

Experience

I perform in several historical bands, have informally researched the area, repair brass instruments, and operate a Forum dedicated to the topic at http://horn-u-copia.net
