Antique Musical Instruments/Martin Freres Flute

Question
Hi,
I recently bought a flute and was trying to look up some information about it, but didn't find anything. The flute is silver and it has inscribed in it "Martin Freres Paris 1740" and on another piece it says "Made in France". Could you help me with some information about this flute and maybe how much it is worth?
         Thanks

Answer
Hi Isaac,

Is it an older flute?  My knowledge base is more in historical brass instruments, but I tried looking this one up, but didn't find anything.

I had it in my head that this was somebody's trade name, but didn't find it there either.

If it is a newer instruments, there is a good chance I don't have the information.

Expertise

Please note: My area is BRASS instruments, not other wind, string or percussion instruments. I will provide information on antique, obscure and out of production BRASS instruments. 1) Please don't ask for evaluations, I'll not provide them on this site. 2) I am often asked very similar questions, so I'd invite you to first check on Horn-u-Copia.net. Much of the information I have garnered about this topic, I have posted on this WEB site.

Experience

I perform in several historical bands, have informally researched the area, repair brass instruments, and operate a Forum dedicated to the topic at http://horn-u-copia.net
