Question -
I came across a Martin Troubadour trumpet complete with case, oiler, and mouthpiece. The horn is silverplate and has the word "Handcraft" under the Martin insignia. SN 103222. The horn is physically in great shape (I don't play) and appears unrestored. The case is in "fair" shape. Any info you can provide regarding its history or value would be greatly appreciated. I am a lover of Jazz and Jazz instruments but can't play a lick.
Thanks,
JC

The Troubadour was a model of the 30's with a narrow bore and a long thin design. There is a controversy on the serial numbers for Martin's but my best guess is that your horn was made in 1931.
Martin made quality horns, so this should be a good one. Somebody who was interested in a narrow bore trumpet, (which produces a brighter, more penetrating sound than the conventional trumpet) may be interested in this horn.
I wouldn't presume to guess as to value. It really varies considerably, depending on who fancies one like it.

Thanks Kenton for the quick response. Any idea how I might go about getting an estimated value? Do you know of any price guides or publications devoted to such stuff? Thanks again.

AnswerWell, it sort of depends on whether you really want to sell it or whether you are trying to find its value.
The re-sale market is now really dominated by eBay and, many if not most people who are interested in instruments of the category that you Martin is in, would be looking/selling on eBay.
So, if it is your intention to sell it, then eBay will probably end up giving your a fair or better price for it. Used to be you could get bargains on eBay, but now, it is pretty thoroughly searched.
About the only way that sellers come up short is if they don't present the instrument well. Good sharp, detailed pictures and descriptions will help the horn bring a good price.
And, if you only want to get an estimate of the horn's value, eBay is still a pretty good resource. Just keep an eye out for a similar horn.
Also, if you want to send pictures, I could maybe give you a rough idea.
