Question
That is the name inscribed on it,maybe made by Mahillon. Probably made in europe somewhere. Probably not worth much, my guess. Anybody interested in it email me(arroyoe@coned.com).

Question -
What can you tell me of a "Madelon" metal clarinet.
The numbers inscribed on the neck are M4544 and Pat.1,705634

Any information would be appreciated.

Answer -
I've never heard of Madelon as a maker/seller.  Could it be Mahillon?

Answer
Well, it does have a few strikes against it.

Clarinetists generally don't like metal clarinets.

And, the brand is rather obscure so most folks would not know whether it was any good or not.

Charles Mahillon founded his business in Bruxelles in 1836, and continued in business until 1935.  In its earlier years appear to have been a notable highly regarded company, but in later years, they slowed down.

There was also a Mahillon & Co, in London, from 1844-1922 which was a branch of the above company.

Please note: My area is BRASS instruments, not other wind, string or percussion instruments. I will provide information on antique, obscure and out of production BRASS instruments. 1) Please don't ask for evaluations, I'll not provide them on this site. 2) I am often asked very similar questions, so I'd invite you to first check on Horn-u-Copia.net. Much of the information I have garnered about this topic, I have posted on this WEB site.

Experience

I perform in several historical bands, have informally researched the area, repair brass instruments, and operate a Forum dedicated to the topic at http://horn-u-copia.net
