Antique Musical Instruments/Old Holton Trumpet

Question
My band teacher was about to throw out an old trumpet, when i piped in and told him i would take it. So i got it. It's a Holton trumpet, its brass, and i want to know what it is exactly. The upper part of the valves are curved in slightly. Like curves. And the bell says
Frank Holton
   48 (?)
Elkhorn, MS.
 U.S.A.
The serial # is - 187405.

Answer
You have a Model 48 trumpet coincidentally from 1948.  It was a professional level instrument, and one that in playing condition should perform well.  It was made in Elkhorn WIS.

I assume it was being thrown away because it wasn't in good condition, but it may be worth repair if it isn't too bad.

Expertise

Please note: My area is BRASS instruments, not other wind, string or percussion instruments. I will provide information on antique, obscure and out of production BRASS instruments. 1) Please don't ask for evaluations, I'll not provide them on this site. 2) I am often asked very similar questions, so I'd invite you to first check on Horn-u-Copia.net. Much of the information I have garnered about this topic, I have posted on this WEB site.

Experience

I perform in several historical bands, have informally researched the area, repair brass instruments, and operate a Forum dedicated to the topic at http://horn-u-copia.net
