Antique Musical Instruments/Old Instruments

Question
My friend is selling his home and I've been looking up some old instruments here to get an idea on value.  My question is that one expert on this website states that ALL Stat violins are accounted for.  Another expert on this website says 600-700 of the 1000 are accounted for.
Can someone tell me which is true?

Answer
I think the point that people are trying to make is that it is extremely unlikely that someone is going to discover a previously unknown instrument.

No one is going to be able to describe the existance or demise of all the instruments that were made.  And no one knows the exact number that were made.

But it is reasonable that of those that are still in existance their location is probably known.

Expertise

Please note: My area is BRASS instruments, not other wind, string or percussion instruments. I will provide information on antique, obscure and out of production BRASS instruments. 1) Please don't ask for evaluations, I'll not provide them on this site. 2) I am often asked very similar questions, so I'd invite you to first check on Horn-u-Copia.net. Much of the information I have garnered about this topic, I have posted on this WEB site.

Experience

I perform in several historical bands, have informally researched the area, repair brass instruments, and operate a Forum dedicated to the topic at http://horn-u-copia.net
