Antique Musical Instruments/Old Saxophone

Question
I purchased an old Continental saxophone at an auction. Other info on the sax: Pat. Sept 14, 1915.  A 51171 L

What can you tell me about this saxophone? Would this be an acceptable instrument for my grandson to play in the school band or should we consider buying a newer instrument?

Thanks.

Answer
This is probably a student level instrument made by Conn.  In all likelihood it is the same as their Pan American offerings.  It is tuned to modern pitch, so it should play with a modern band.  Continental was started in 1923, so it is no older than that.

I would think it is at least potentially an appropriate instrument for a young student.  I would suggest you let an experienced saxophonist give it a try and help you make your decision on it.

Expertise

Please note: My area is BRASS instruments, not other wind, string or percussion instruments. I will provide information on antique, obscure and out of production BRASS instruments. 1) Please don't ask for evaluations, I'll not provide them on this site. 2) I am often asked very similar questions, so I'd invite you to first check on Horn-u-Copia.net. Much of the information I have garnered about this topic, I have posted on this WEB site.

Experience

I perform in several historical bands, have informally researched the area, repair brass instruments, and operate a Forum dedicated to the topic at http://horn-u-copia.net
