Antique Musical Instruments/Old Trumpet

Question
I just got this old trumpet that was owned by a friend's grandfather. (My friend is in her 60's) It says Buescher Elkhart in the engravings on the bell, and on the second valve it says True-Tone, and below that Pat. Oct 29 07  followed by the serial 159174 and then an LP and an 11 at the bottom. It is beaten up and doesn't play at all open, but you can play it with the first valve down. There is also some sort of pivot mechanism that seems to lower the pitch. Anything you can tell me about this trumpet would very helpful and more than I know right now.

Answer
The patent is for what Buescher advertised as the Split no tone Bell.

The horn was made in 1924.

The LP means it plays in modern A=440 modern pitch.

The pivot mechanism is used to change keys, probably Bb to A.

Buescher made good professional quality instruments.

Expertise

Please note: My area is BRASS instruments, not other wind, string or percussion instruments. I will provide information on antique, obscure and out of production BRASS instruments. 1) Please don't ask for evaluations, I'll not provide them on this site. 2) I am often asked very similar questions, so I'd invite you to first check on Horn-u-Copia.net. Much of the information I have garnered about this topic, I have posted on this WEB site.

Experience

I perform in several historical bands, have informally researched the area, repair brass instruments, and operate a Forum dedicated to the topic at http://horn-u-copia.net
