Antique Musical Instruments/Professional Wurlitzer French Horn
Expert: Kenton Scott - 7/21/2007
QuestionQUESTION: My community band (started 1889) has a number of instruments I am researching. First is a Professional Wurlitzer what appears to be a type of French Horn serial # A14158, it seems small for a French Horn though. From researching the hotel stickers on the horns case I would guess about 1920's, anything closer would be of help. Second is a CG Conn Trombone # 101299. From what I can find that puts it about 1907. Only other marking, besides the union label, is a 5 on the opposite slide from the serial number. Finally a Martin Handcraft Sousaphone # 88196, which would date it about 1929. How are these horns? I will appreciate any help you can give me. Hoping to work with local historical society on an exhibit. All horns work and Sousaphone is still being used.
ANSWER: There are no serial number lists for Wurlitzer. Could it be a mellophone?
I would agree on the age of the Conn Trombone. Most trombones of that age do not play as expected to modern players. The slides are made with looser tolerances which make them handle differently and generally they have a smaller bore which give them a more cutting tone.
I think the Martin is close, my list says 1928. Martin instruments enjoy a fine reputation. And, though I've never tried a Martin sousa, I would expect it to be a player.

QUESTION: Thanks for getting back to me. I looked at your site and found the Wurlitzer there it is exactly like the picture you have of the Vocal Horn. I can't find much out about these, though have only been looking a day. Any information would prove helpful.
Thank you very much
AnswerWell, that is an interesting horn. The vocal horns were marketed as a solo instrument. They are similar to mellophones. Although it is wrapped a bit differently than the mellophone and it appears that the flare of the bell on that horn is fuller than the typical mellophone. Vocal horns come in a variety of pitches. Some are in Bb, some in F and some in Eb. Also the bells can point any direction: up, forward or down.
