Antique Musical Instruments/Re: 5-valve Holton-Sansone

Question
Kenton,

I think you are mistaken. The questioner said that the pinky valve lowered pitch by a half-step. On the Sansone Bb the pinky (5th) valve was the long tubing that lowered pitch by the rough equivalent of  valves 1+3 - similar to the 4th valve on a piccolo trumpet. The 1st or thumb valve was a muting valve - so it seems as though the questioner's Holton reverses that Sansone pattern. BTW, I've got a Sansone 5-valve made by Kruspe in Erfurt.

Oh, I wouldn't find that surprising.  Only problem is, that though I do try to field questions on AllExperts, I haven't gotten very well versed on its structure, and I don't know how to get back to what the original conversation was all about.

Hopefully, the original questioner will find your information, and not be mis-led by anything I may have said.

Thanks

Expertise

Please note: My area is BRASS instruments, not other wind, string or percussion instruments. I will provide information on antique, obscure and out of production BRASS instruments. 1) Please don't ask for evaluations, I'll not provide them on this site. 2) I am often asked very similar questions, so I'd invite you to first check on Horn-u-Copia.net. Much of the information I have garnered about this topic, I have posted on this WEB site.

Experience

I perform in several historical bands, have informally researched the area, repair brass instruments, and operate a Forum dedicated to the topic at http://horn-u-copia.net
