Question
QUESTION: I'm looking at a Holton T602R serial #041960. Can you tell me when it was manufactured and whether or not it would be good for an intermediate student (7th grader, 3rd year playing).  The Holton website shows a T602S, T602PC but I can't find "R".  Thanks for your help.

ANSWER: Well, it isn't actually a Holton - or is so only in the sense that it is a stenciled horn that is actually made by Yamaha.  Should be a good horn for your student, assuming it is still in good condiiton.

QUESTION: How confusing! So is it better than the Holtons or the same or are all Holtons made by Yamaha? Is it a beginner or intermediate instrument and approximately how old would it be?  Thanks you soooo much for your help.

Answer
Well, it is different than the true Holtons.  Holton made good instruments - I went through college on a Holton.  But, Yamaha also makes good instruments - I now play on a Yamaha.  I don't know how one would date one of these stenciled Holtons, but age really isn't an issue on one of these horns.  If it is in good condition, it will play well.

Expertise

Please note: My area is BRASS instruments, not other wind, string or percussion instruments. I will provide information on antique, obscure and out of production BRASS instruments. 1) Please don't ask for evaluations, I'll not provide them on this site. 2) I am often asked very similar questions, so I'd invite you to first check on Horn-u-Copia.net. Much of the information I have garnered about this topic, I have posted on this WEB site.

Experience

I perform in several historical bands, have informally researched the area, repair brass instruments, and operate a Forum dedicated to the topic at http://horn-u-copia.net
