Question
Hi Kenton, I have a tough one for you. I have a silver color that has the following on the bell:
Werlein Special New Orleans LA
It is pat pending of 1914. It is certainly from about that year. Can you tell me anything about it? There is a music store in New Orleans call Werlein Music store. I found no other info on the internet. Thanks. Eric

Answer
Yep, that is a tough one.  However, it does sound plausible that if is a store stencil from Werlein Music.  You might want to contact them and see if they have any information.  If it doesn't have the name of another country on it, it was probably domestically made.  If it had given a patent number, we might have been able to deduce the maker, Oh well.

Expertise

Please note: My area is BRASS instruments, not other wind, string or percussion instruments. I will provide information on antique, obscure and out of production BRASS instruments. 1) Please don't ask for evaluations, I'll not provide them on this site. 2) I am often asked very similar questions, so I'd invite you to first check on Horn-u-Copia.net. Much of the information I have garnered about this topic, I have posted on this WEB site.

Experience

I perform in several historical bands, have informally researched the area, repair brass instruments, and operate a Forum dedicated to the topic at http://horn-u-copia.net
