Question
I had just bought an old silver trumpet from a thrift store in minnesota.  I play violin, so I know absolutely nothing about any band instrument.  So I was just wondering if you could possibly give me some information on this trumpet and if it is worth anything.  On the bell (i think thats the name for it) there is an engravement that says: Made by CG Conn Ltd. Elkhart-IND U.S.A. I tried looking to see if i could find the date it was made, but there is no date, and i can't find the serial number, although there are some numbers on middle valve (210549) but the site says that the serial number should have a dash in it. Like i said i know absolutly nothing about band instruments.

Thank you

Jax

Answer
Well, it sounds like you have a 1924 model.  Conns from the '20's are good models intended for professionals.  So, the next issue would be what condition it is in.  If all the parts are there, and not too badly crushed up, it has hope.  It is a good thing if the valves move freely.  The issues would be whether the valves are badly worn, or damaged.  Stuck slides are not a big deal.  And most dents will come out reasonably well.

If you have pictures, I might be able to get a better idea of what you have.

Expertise

Please note: My area is BRASS instruments, not other wind, string or percussion instruments. I will provide information on antique, obscure and out of production BRASS instruments. 1) Please don't ask for evaluations, I'll not provide them on this site. 2) I am often asked very similar questions, so I'd invite you to first check on Horn-u-Copia.net. Much of the information I have garnered about this topic, I have posted on this WEB site.

Experience

I perform in several historical bands, have informally researched the area, repair brass instruments, and operate a Forum dedicated to the topic at http://horn-u-copia.net
