Question
Hello Mr Scott, i have aquired an old snare type double sided drum, looks a little like marching band type, engraved on brass plaque is the maker Boosey & Hawkes with a registration mark 18235, i have contacted the maker and they sold the instrument side of their buisness to a company that has folded some time since, hence they have no records kept for that registration mark, can you please suggest where i may find more info on this drum, also i have already tried several drum dealers that you have recommended for others.
Regards Ed.

Answer
I'm not really going to be of much help.  I don't really know much about drums.  Boosey and Hawkes ran different serial number sequences for different types of instruments.  And, I know of no listing for percussion.

Beyond that, I would think that you will probably need to date it by the design.  If it is a rope tension drum, then it is going to be older than if it has another tensioning system.

Expertise

Please note: My area is BRASS instruments, not other wind, string or percussion instruments. I will provide information on antique, obscure and out of production BRASS instruments. 1) Please don't ask for evaluations, I'll not provide them on this site. 2) I am often asked very similar questions, so I'd invite you to first check on Horn-u-Copia.net. Much of the information I have garnered about this topic, I have posted on this WEB site.

Experience

I perform in several historical bands, have informally researched the area, repair brass instruments, and operate a Forum dedicated to the topic at http://horn-u-copia.net
