Question
the no. is 47904 made in Elkhart IND. and there is art work on the bell

is this a rare one or not

Answer
Rita,

Sounds to me like you have an old sax from about 1918.

And, yes that would make it pretty rare, simply because of its age. Which is a separate question from whether it is valuable or not.  Its value would of course depend on it condition as well as whether there is a market for it.  I don't think that saxes that are that old are as prized for their playability as a lot of technical advances have happened since then, but a collector may find it interesting.

Expertise

Please note: My area is BRASS instruments, not other wind, string or percussion instruments. I will provide information on antique, obscure and out of production BRASS instruments. 1) Please don't ask for evaluations, I'll not provide them on this site. 2) I am often asked very similar questions, so I'd invite you to first check on Horn-u-Copia.net. Much of the information I have garnered about this topic, I have posted on this WEB site.

Experience

I perform in several historical bands, have informally researched the area, repair brass instruments, and operate a Forum dedicated to the topic at http://horn-u-copia.net
