Antique Musical Instruments/euphonium

Question
I've read that you believe buescher to be a good brand.  I have a euphonium that most likely dates to the late 40's.  It is in fair to good condition.  Would it be worth fixing it up for my son to play?  The number 588 is on the valves, but the number 23 is on the bell(which rotates to fit the case).

Answer
I'm not about a serial number of 588.  If that is what it is, the horn is a lot older than the 40s.  But, anyway, a Buescher that is in fair to good condition would certainly be worth fixing up for your son.

Sometimes, kids are impressed by what is shiny and new, but hopefully, he will be able to recognize that it actually plays well, and maybe better than some of the shiny ones.

Expertise

Please note: My area is BRASS instruments, not other wind, string or percussion instruments. I will provide information on antique, obscure and out of production BRASS instruments. 1) Please don't ask for evaluations, I'll not provide them on this site. 2) I am often asked very similar questions, so I'd invite you to first check on Horn-u-Copia.net. Much of the information I have garnered about this topic, I have posted on this WEB site.

Experience

I perform in several historical bands, have informally researched the area, repair brass instruments, and operate a Forum dedicated to the topic at http://horn-u-copia.net
