Hello Mr Scott, I have just purchased a french horn from the junk market - it
says J Higham Ltd Strangeways Manchester and has a serial number 59644 - I
have tried to find out about it on the internet but there isnt much to read and
I wondered if you could enlighten me about the likely age of the instrument
etc.  Many hanks

Answer
Joesph Higham established his business in Manchester in 1842.  He was succeeded by his son-in-law Peter Robinson in 1883, who sold out in 1911.  In 1923 Mayers and Harrison became the proprietors.

I would estimate that it dates to approximately 1915

Expertise

Please note: My area is BRASS instruments, not other wind, string or percussion instruments. I will provide information on antique, obscure and out of production BRASS instruments. 1) Please don't ask for evaluations, I'll not provide them on this site. 2) I am often asked very similar questions, so I'd invite you to first check on Horn-u-Copia.net. Much of the information I have garnered about this topic, I have posted on this WEB site.

Experience

I perform in several historical bands, have informally researched the area, repair brass instruments, and operate a Forum dedicated to the topic at http://horn-u-copia.net
