Question
hi
i have a very old delux model getzen trombone , it was made in elkhorn, wisconsin with the nubers 46099 on it. it is gold with copper rim. how would i go about finding out when it was made ,and how much its worth. i got in 1990 for band, but it was old even then the case and evrything seems 2 be antique.

Answer
Is this one of the Getzen horns that has the scroll shaped reinforcing?  If so, they are really cool looking.  The serial number lists I know of for Getzen start in 1964 and have letter prefixes.  So, I would say that yours is older than that.  Beyond that, Getzen started making trombones in 1946.

As is always with trombones, the value is going to vary widely depending on the condition of the slide.

Expertise

Please note: My area is BRASS instruments, not other wind, string or percussion instruments. I will provide information on antique, obscure and out of production BRASS instruments. 1) Please don't ask for evaluations, I'll not provide them on this site. 2) I am often asked very similar questions, so I'd invite you to first check on Horn-u-Copia.net. Much of the information I have garnered about this topic, I have posted on this WEB site.

Experience

I perform in several historical bands, have informally researched the area, repair brass instruments, and operate a Forum dedicated to the topic at http://horn-u-copia.net
