Question
DID YOU GET THE LAST E-MAIL REGARDING THE SERIAL #20587? I AM WONDERING,AND I REALIZE YOU HAVE NO PHOTOS AND HAVE NOT SEEN MY SAXOPHONE,BUT IS THIS INSTRUMENT VALUABLE? THANK YOU,I APPRECIATE YOUR TIME AND YOUR EXPERTISE.

Answer
Hi Sharon,

Martin ran two serial number lists.  So, unless we can determine which plant it was made, it is conjecture.

Based on your serial number, if it came from the original plant, it would have been made in 1921. If it came from the "Indiana Band Instrument" plant, it would have been made in 1939.

I think if it was an Imperial or Medalist model, then it was made in the Indiana plant, otherwise it is likely to have been made in the original plant.

Do I remember correctly that is an alto?  If so, my guess would be that a horn in top condition, would probably be in the $400-$800 range.

Expertise

Please note: My area is BRASS instruments, not other wind, string or percussion instruments. I will provide information on antique, obscure and out of production BRASS instruments. 1) Please don't ask for evaluations, I'll not provide them on this site. 2) I am often asked very similar questions, so I'd invite you to first check on Horn-u-Copia.net. Much of the information I have garnered about this topic, I have posted on this WEB site.

Experience

I perform in several historical bands, have informally researched the area, repair brass instruments, and operate a Forum dedicated to the topic at http://horn-u-copia.net
