Question

-Hi Kenton I received your reply, the serial numbers on the saxophone are as plain as day there is no wear or anything by the numbers I am wondering if I should let my ten year old play this or hold on to it-would you have any idea how much this would be worth If to much I deffinitely will keep it at home instead of having him leave it at school thank you  Doug Trann-----------------------

Question -
I bought an alto sax at a yard sale for my sixth grader to start band. It is a holton collegiate alto sax Eb serial number 39776 I wondered how old this instrument is hope you can help. thank you

Answer -
Wow, with that serial number, it is an old one.  1917.

Is it possible that there is another digit that has worn off?  I don't know when Holton started the Collegiate line, but I would be surprised to learn that it was that early.

Answer
Hmm, I thought I answered this already.  I wonder where it went.

Anyway, (as I said before <g>) I don't keep track of the values of saxophone, but what I would suggest would be to watch completed eBay auctions and see what similar instruments are going for.

I would point out that Collegiate was Holton's student level instrument.

Expertise

Please note: My area is BRASS instruments, not other wind, string or percussion instruments. I will provide information on antique, obscure and out of production BRASS instruments. 1) Please don't ask for evaluations, I'll not provide them on this site. 2) I am often asked very similar questions, so I'd invite you to first check on Horn-u-Copia.net. Much of the information I have garnered about this topic, I have posted on this WEB site.

Experience

I perform in several historical bands, have informally researched the area, repair brass instruments, and operate a Forum dedicated to the topic at http://horn-u-copia.net
