Hello
I have recently acquired a beautiful piccolo in its original wooden box

appear on the centre section there is silver banding aaround each section  and there are numerous keys ? a small double round one on the base  followed by a large one on the side followed very closely by a small one going 1/2 way  around the section another longer key  on the side and a smaller one next to that- sorry but this is this only way i can describe it - could you please assist me on perhaps maker -date and the wood it could possibly made from - thank you very much for your time - sharon

Answer
Hi Sharon,

I don't know that much about woodwinds, but I do know that Haynes is a long time maker of the finest flutes and Pics.  John C. started working for Oliver Ditson, until Ditson's death and began his own company in about 1888.  He was joined by brothers and relatives in making highly respected instruments.

Expertise

Please note: My area is BRASS instruments, not other wind, string or percussion instruments. I will provide information on antique, obscure and out of production BRASS instruments. 1) Please don't ask for evaluations, I'll not provide them on this site. 2) I am often asked very similar questions, so I'd invite you to first check on Horn-u-Copia.net. Much of the information I have garnered about this topic, I have posted on this WEB site.

Experience

I perform in several historical bands, have informally researched the area, repair brass instruments, and operate a Forum dedicated to the topic at http://horn-u-copia.net
