Question
I have a metal(silver looking)one piece clarinet. I would like more info please. The only thing on the horn is Supertone made in U.S.A. and a number at the top E10652.I have searched the internet and found nothing.

Answer
Hi Beth,

Clarinets made of silver plated brass were an idea that was tried - I believe - during the depression, and some lasted into the 50's.  Although, I understand that a quality clarinet can be made of metal, most of those that were actually made were intended to be an inexpensive alternative to wooden ones, and proved to be adequate for only beginning students.

Supertone was a brand names used by Sears and Robuck.  It is unlikely that this instrument plays well.

As far as I know, there are no serial number lists (showing manufacture dates) for Supertone instruments.

Expertise

Please note: My area is BRASS instruments, not other wind, string or percussion instruments. I will provide information on antique, obscure and out of production BRASS instruments. 1) Please don't ask for evaluations, I'll not provide them on this site. 2) I am often asked very similar questions, so I'd invite you to first check on Horn-u-Copia.net. Much of the information I have garnered about this topic, I have posted on this WEB site.

Experience

I perform in several historical bands, have informally researched the area, repair brass instruments, and operate a Forum dedicated to the topic at http://horn-u-copia.net
