Antique Musical Instruments/mouthpiece

Question
Hi - I have a mouthpiece, either Fr. horn (or maybe alto horn - it seems to have a shallower cup than a Fr. horn) that has a mark on it: "BARTH Stuttgart", then low on the cup is a "4" and on the stem is a "5". It is solid brass, looks quite old. Any thoughts?

Answer
There was a Robert Barth in Stuttgart, in the late 1800s, so it is likely his, although there were a number of Barths making instruments.

You can probably get an idea of what instrument the mouthpiece was intended for, by the shank size.  "Probably" because there is some variation, particularly among the early makers.  As a general rule an alto horn mouthpiece will fit a trumpet.  A mellophone mouthpiece will fit a cornet.

Expertise

Please note: My area is BRASS instruments, not other wind, string or percussion instruments. I will provide information on antique, obscure and out of production BRASS instruments. 1) Please don't ask for evaluations, I'll not provide them on this site. 2) I am often asked very similar questions, so I'd invite you to first check on Horn-u-Copia.net. Much of the information I have garnered about this topic, I have posted on this WEB site.

Experience

I perform in several historical bands, have informally researched the area, repair brass instruments, and operate a Forum dedicated to the topic at http://horn-u-copia.net
